Sunday Funday

Symbolic
Republican Honolulu City Councilman Charles Djou won the special election in Hawaii's 1st district to replace Neil Abercrombie, a 10-term Democratic congressman who resigned to run for governor. Djou had been leading in recent public polls in the winner-takes-all contest -- largely as a result of a feud between two Democratic candidates that has splintered their party's base. The win hands the Republican Party a symbolic victory in its bid to regain control of Congress. (Washington Post, 5/23/10)

Repub wins a seat in Obama’s home state held by a Dem for 10 terms. That’s some kind of symbolism!

We Can Work It Out
President Obama previewed a new national security strategy rooted in diplomatic engagement and international alliances on Saturday as he essentially repudiated his predecessor’s emphasis on unilateral American power and the right to wage pre-emptive war. (NYT, 5/23/10)

Obama added: my strategy based on unilateral disarmament and apologies to the rest of the world is already paying huge dividends. Doesn’t the world already feel like a safer place?

Try, Try Again
Across Western Europe, the “lifestyle superpower,” the assumptions and gains of a lifetime are suddenly in doubt. The deficit crisis that threatens the euro has also undermined the sustainability of the European standard of social welfare, built by left-leaning governments since the end of World War II. (NYT, 5/23/10)

Which, of course, is exactly why Obama is moving in the same direction.
